Woody Allen. The name alone is enough to induce awe and admiration in anyone who has even the slightest interest in movies. The man has been going at it for some 61 years now, and has a pretty decent track record. Bar the occasional dud, you can be pretty sure you're in for a good time, whenever you watch one of his movies.
But some of them give you more than just a good time. Some of them will make you go "Wow!" 'Bullets over Broadway' is one of those movies.
As with any Allen movie, 'Bullets over Broadway' is whimsical and slightly silly and full of frustrated characters who obsess over minuscule problems. While not one of his funniest films, several scenes will definitely make you smile.
However that's not what provides the Wow-effect.
That comes from the incredibly clever way Allen makes life imitate art, imitate life, imitate art. The story is about a young sceenwriter who tries to put on the perfect play, and though it might take a little while for you to realize it, soon you will start to notice that this play and the screenwriter's life are quite similar. More and more the two flow into one another, to a point where the two are almost inseparable, in a way that has surely been of great inspiration to subsequent auteurs, Charlie Kaufman being the most prominent.
